How the "think tube" works?

We had a thinking tube demo today in chemistry where there's a tube that has strings and knots. When you pull on one string up, the other strings would go up and down. Additionally, at the end of class, my teacher pulled the pipe apart showing that not strings were connected through the pipe.(maybe it was a optical illusion) I'm curious to know on how it works. I don't think our teacher is gonna tell the class the answer. :/

  1. It seems a common (perhaps "standard") configuration for a "think tube" is; Left string enters tube at top left and runs through a some sort of ring (could be a paper clip) in the center of the tube, then exits bottom left, right string going through the same ring, (in the center of the tube) before exiting bottom right. If one holds the bottom right string while holding the tube, then pulls the top left string, then the bottom left string rises, but if one is holding the the bottom left string while pulling the top left, then the bottom right rises, and the same is true in revers for the right side. Also if one pulls either bottom string, the other bottom string rises.
