How did the cathode ray tube prove the electron existed?

I understand J.J. Thompson used the cathode ray tube to prove its existence and negative charge, but "how" did it prove its existence and negative charge. In other words, I need a simple explanation of the event and how the cathode ray tube proved the electrons existence. My chemistry teacher didn't explain it well at all. It would also help if you explained the discovery of the nucleus by Rutherford simply as welll. Thanks so much. Your help is greatly appreciated.
