How does prevailing wages work? My father has his own pool plumbing business. They are going to do a job at a university. The company that hired them to do that job is going to play my fathers helpers in prevailing wages, how exactly does that work? My husband is one of the helpers and is all happy that he is going to get paid $30 an hour, while over here with my dad he gets paid $15 an hour. Or am I confusing it with priviledge wages?
Is it possible (or likely) to get an entry level construction job with prevailing wages? So I live in washington state. I've been doing mostly lame paper pushing office jobs most of my life, but I'm looking for a career change, and have been thinking about construction because I've been hearing its possible to move up fast and be making pretty decent (like $30+ an hour) in just a few years. I also talked to a guy who told me all about prevailing wages in the construction business, and says that he got hired with almost no experience to a company that is paying him prevailing wages 8 months out of the year. However when I talked to the boss of the company, he didn't seem interested in hiring me with no official experience, despite all my personal construction experience. So I'm wondering, is it likely to be able to find a job that offers prevailing wages, with my lack of experience. And if so, do you know any good tips to help me in my search?
Is it legal for my employer to take a percentage of my prevailing wages for health care costs? I work for a company that has two type hourly rates. One is a base wage and the other is prevailing wage. Prevailing wages typically pay twice as much as the base wage. The type of wage is determined by the type of contract the company bids on and wins. All of the employees come out of the same pool. Some will end up on a base wage type of job and others on prevailing wages. This can be for different reasons such as proximity to the job or who is available at the time. My employer pays 100% of my medical/dental when I am on a base wage job. However, if I go on prevailing wages, my employer takes a percentage of my wages and the cost out of my pay check is very high (a few hundred dollars a month). Is it legal for my employer to purchase group insurance at a fixed cost yet charge me a percentage of my prevailing wages and make me pay more than when I am making a base wage?
Would Americns be willing to do Hard labor for the PREVAILING wages businesses can afford? anti-immigrants brood over illegals...but they REFUSE to do the jobs themselves will they work 5 day 10 hr shifts...(yes hrs is a requirement) in 100+ weather from 6m to 4:30pm each day its not easy anyone will do any job for the right amount of money, that argument is illogical and irrelevant....the problem is the prevailing wage is all farmers can AFFORD to pay....they shout that from there shuttering businesses because they are already PAYING TOO MUCH.. Low wages is ALL they can afford to pay given the low prices Americans want. but ill help you anti immigrants out with the question... you could send people on welfare or prisoners ...to do the work....especially when 83% of welfare recipients have English surnames but anytime we suggest that...anti immigrants say welfare recipients dont have to work ...hehehe go figure... and dont give me tired answers like its not whites Blacks have English surnames too because they are Americans as well and SHOULD be WORKING, or that proportionately there are more whites than Hispanics therefore necessarily there will be more whites on welfare...the math of this is true I wont deny...but that just means theres more able people leeching instead of working PERFECT!! ok, so then: If you anti-immigrants are willing to work for those EXACT wages as you guys are claiming...and there is such a high demand from Americans...as you re also claiming... then it begs the question....why ARNT people doing it...There are farms in California where farmers are STARVING for workers...they constantly complain about labor shortages.... everyone says " oh yes we'll work for minimum.." but no one ever shows up!!!! hehehe better call a Mexican. Bobby nd nyone else: If you re really serious about WORKING I can forward you the info...I m however in California....but there are JOBS A PLENTY for those with a WORK ETHIC...and able to withstand hard manual labor. please advise ONLY if your serious... too many people unaccustomed to REAL HARD work...quit after the first day. joel w: your response tickles me since you dont know me personally it would be illogical for you to ASSume what i do or do not know. you don't know what line of Business Im in. If you base your argument on unproven assumptions...you'll come to incorrect conclusions.. *sigh* why do people argue with there emotions instead of with reasoned intelligence.... btw. I dont support any illegal acts (in case it needs to be pointed out) I do however propone that we THINK LOGICLY about issues ANY issue ===================================== Miss Daisy: I do speak for myself, obviously. I m not too lazy to do these jobs, (have you ever done them?) I dont ASSume...I know firsthand they wont take them...I offer antis jobs all the time ...guess what THEY NEVER SHOW UP Immigrants do HARD work for wages that keep American business AFLOAT IT's called the Capitalist Free Market.. nice try buttercup...do some research and come back if you want to play a little.... ================================== Miss Daisy...oh yeah why do you copy my style of writing (ASSume)...dont you know imitation is the greatest form of flattery....; )

Do Public Schools fall under Prevailing Wage? I'm working for an alarm co. installing in a Public School in IL I am not sure if I am eligable for prevailing wages. A union rep said that we were, when we were on the job when the union guys were. They threaten to walk off, but we left instead and now we have to work at night as not to see them. So I am not getting a premium to work nights and I am not getting prevailing wage. I am working for an alarm company installing in a public school in McHenry County, IL. I only ask, cause the head Union guy that was on there when we first showed up said we were eligible, he said we should be making what the electricians do, but I don't want to say anything with fear of being fired. And I thought about reporting it, but I want to be certain. Cause there are only a couple of us on the job and it would be obvious one of us did it.
Are you required to pay Prevailing Wages for state contract jobs? My husband is a HVAC (refrigeration) Technician and has been working a contracted state job for several weeks now. The current prevailing wage for our county in Nevada is $33.04/hr in his position, but he's only getting paid $24.06/hr. My husband actually found the prevailing wage info on the computer at his work that belongs to the bookkeeper (yes, they surf the web on it with his boss/owner so it was okay for him to be on it). Is this legal for them to not pay the prevailing wage? Are they required to only pay a % of what the prevailing wage is? There is another, more experienced, employee who is making the same $24.06/hr rate and he's beyonded angry. If this isn't legal, what do you suggest we do? Please, no stupid answers! Yes, I verified the rate on his pay stubs and it is $24.06/hr before taxes. I also have spent the last 2 hours on the internet researching information. According to the labor commissioner, his prevailing rate is indeed $33.04/hr for us. The interesting thing to me is that they ARE paying him prevailing wages. It states "prevailing wages" for this specific job on his pay stub since his pay rate is different than either of these amounts. So if they are paying him prevailing wages, shouldn't it match what the labor commission states the rate should be?
I was supposed to be paid Prevailing Wages. but was not? My former employer had a contract with a California State school. I have done a lot of work there. I know that they are supposed to pay us according to the prevailing wage. However, I was only paid my normal rate. I said nothing because I was happy with my job and did not want to start any problems. Now they fired me for doing a poor job i did while injured and not supposed to be working. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuEd9VqhfZ6cAVs4GefvXVDsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090825225336AAVSO9k Now that I have no cash flow do I have any recourse against my former employer?
how does a prevailing wage job work? As an employer if you take on a job that is prevailing wage how does it work? I know it is a specific wage for the employees, but are there certain forms that must be filled out? What needs to be reported to the builder? Do we need any special license or fill out any applications to do a prevailing wage job? I ask because I have a builder who says his job is not union but it is a prevailing wage job. I have never done one before and would like some info so I can price the job accordingly or even have to turn it down if I am not able to meet the requirements to do a prevailing wage job. Any help would be appreciated. I am in Illinois.

What are the San Francisco Prevailing Wages? Hello. Thank you so much for answering my question. I have a small business, and for the first time, I'd like to hire a person for work in San Francisco. We do bathtub refinishing, and it would be part time to start. But how do I arrive at a wage for the person? My employee in a nearby county (Sonoma) makes about $25 per hour plus mileage, but he is experienced (five years) and does magnificent work. Additionally, is it OK or advisable to let the workman keep my truck at his home? I do not have a San Francisco location, nor am I planning to get one, because of the huge cost involved. Thanks again. Wayne
I'm supposed to be paid 'prevailing wage' at my job, but I'm not. What to do? If I gripe about the wage, I will be "laid off." But I am earning a third of what the posted prevailing wage is supposed to be. (It is for a contractor, at a University-site job.) Should I wait 3-4 weeks til the job is over, and then try to claim back wages? or just go to the local L & I office, and make them be the bad guy?
Company did not pay prevailing wage as promised? My husband did a job on a Navy base and was told by his boss they would be getting prevailing wage. (He had to be cleared to get on base etc) They were all paid their regular wage rather than prevailing. From what I can find any job on a government base (and some public works) on a bid basis are all prevailing wage to keep businesses from underbidding by paying lower wages. Can anyone help? Not sure where we should go, we paid out of pocket for travel as it is and don't feel that this is right. We are in California - the job was in the San Diego area. (It was a tile job - expert level) I am sure there is. To be honest, no it is not a huge difference. Maybe $10 bucks an hour lost so under 1k - it is really more the principal of the matter. Does not seem right to me...
