Best places to live for a UCLA professor? I'm a candidate to become a professor in the UCLA. Being a foreigner, I don't know what are the best places to live near my new job. I did live in Orange County (Brea and Fullerton) for almost 3 years, but I don't know about LA county. Would Santa Clarita and Thousand Oaks be good places, or are these two cities too far from UCLA? I really wish to find a nearby place with a very low crime rate. Also the place must not have skyrocketing renting prices for a good sized apartment.
How good is UCLA for becoming a history professor? Well im a little young to worry about college right now, but i wanna be able to have my options. I know this is a stupid way of finding a college but i took a quiz for what college i should go to and i got UCLA. How good is it compared to any other colleges? i wanna be a history professor.. is UCLA a college i should try for? Thanks :)
Is there an indoor place at UCLA for a non-student study group to meet? I am part of a group of 4 people that will be meeting with a UCLA professor to study 1x/week, but we are not students. We would prefer to meet on campus, rather than an off-campus coffee shop, etc. Thanks!!
how do i look up past professors at ucla? like who taught economics in 1990
Why not so much as a peep from liberals about the La Raza UCLA professor's statements? when they are apt to instantly accuse the Tea Party of plotting terrorist acts? The guy stood there and yelled that Latinos in America are the Northern Front of a coming war with the U.S. Also we have the illegal protesting the Arizona law saying, "We will use our shovels and pickaxes against you!" does freedom of speech include calling for a war?
Name of the black anti-affirmative action professor from UCLA? He campainged againts affirmative action in California and across the USA over 10 years ago. I think he was a professor at UCLA?
How cutthroat is the engineering competition at ucla and ucsd compared to uc davis and cal poly slo? In undergraduate engineering what is the competition like? Are they overall the same or is ucla full of uber geniuses compared to slo? How hard are the professors on grading? etc etc Any comments, opinions, and anecdotes are helpful and if it helps, I'm not one of the brightest students in high school weighted gpa 4.19 (right under ucla avg for all freshmen) AP US 5, AP World 5, AP English 3 sats 1990 act 31 math 2 800 us history 750 and I know most freshmen engineers have stats better than mine So what is the competition like at these schools relative to each other? Is ucla and ucsd so hard in engineering that I would not have a college life cuz of the workload? ok yeah that answer had good details t now im scared cuz if it turns out I don't love engineering I'll probably end up in medical school which i need a good gpa for more opinions comments and experiences plz
Should a UCLA college professor be allowed to advocate hate against white people? I believe that college professors should not be allowed to advocate hate and oppression of any ethnic or racial group that is different from them as colleges should be respectful of people from all ethnic and racial backgrounds. In a video, a UCLA professor talks about having a violent revolt against non-Latinos, especially whites. This is what happens when school curriculums focuses on and exploits past grievances instead of explaining how every racial and ethnic group from one time or another has done both good and bad things to groups different from them. Video of the speech: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/7165215/18659668
Do you agree with the UCLA Professor on his views of what America should do about immigration? TO ALL PEOPLE WHO ARE AGAINST THE ARIZONA LAW: This is a Latin American studies professor at a rally. He spells out quite clearly what the open borders crowd wants for America. Is this what you want for America? Why or why not? Do you truly understand the agenda of the hardcore open borders crowd and their ultimate agenda? Is this REALLY what you want? REALLY. Your thoughts on this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=993gKr2OqZE&feature=player_embedded
Do you think the UCLA La Raza professor might have "let the cat out of the bag" a little prematurely? when he said that Latinos in America were the Northern Front of a war against the U.S. and called for them to rise up against it? Or was he just being racist as far as most Latinos are concerned? I didn't see anyone shout out against him. They seemed to be cheering him on.
How much individual work do students attending UCLA have on a daily basis? Just a sum of all subjects, and I know that it varies between courses and professors, but I would just like an idea. Thank you!
Why do organizations like ALF and ELF use violence to make a statement? I read that the enviromentalist groups burned some coffee shops and car dealerships and that the animal rights people were sending bomb threats to the UCLA professors for animal research. Isn't the bad press counter-productive? I don't feel any sympathy for someone who acts aggressively but I might feel more apt to listen at a rally or some peaceful venue. Am I wrong for being against violent demonstration?
Does this UCLA Professor have the Right to Vote for Obama Since He Hasn't Been Found Guilty Yet? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081018/ap_on_re_us/body_parts_trafficking_3
Is there a transcript of the Western Tradition video series available online? The Western Tradition is a series of lectures by UCLA Professor Eugen Weber that cover almost all of European history. I am looking for a transcript of the lectures in this series.
Where would be best to go for biology: UCLA or Berkeley? Did FDR's policy really prolong the Great Depression by 7 years, as leading UCLA economists now believe? In an article in the August issue of the Journal of Political Economy, Ohanian and Cole blame specific anti-competition and pro-labor measures that Roosevelt promoted and signed into law June 16, 1933. "President Roosevelt believed that excessive competition was responsible for the Depression by reducing prices and wages, and by extension reducing employment and demand for goods and services," said Cole, also a UCLA professor of economics. "So he came up with a recovery package that would be unimaginable today, allowing businesses in every industry to collude without the threat of antitrust prosecution and workers to demand salaries about 25 percent above where they ought to have been, given market forces. The economy was poised for a beautiful recovery, but that recovery was stalled by these misguided policies." http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/FDR-s-Policies-Prolonged-Depression-5409.aspx?RelNum=5409
Cal Poly SLO architecural engineering vs. UCLA civil engineering? I've been admitted to both, but I'm not sure which one to go to.From what i've heard Cal Poly engineers have a greater chance of landing jobs after graduating than graduates of UCLA,because it's ranked fifth in the nation for its engineering department. There are positives and negatives to both schools, but i can't figure out which are more important. CPslo has an outstanding program, small number of students, low key environment, and I'll have friends from high school who'll be there, but i'm not sure what the town is like. UCLA is prestigious, has rediculously good basketball and other sports games, nicest looking campus, countless things to do on campus and in westwood, but has nearly twice as many students than cal poly slo.Does the high competitiveness of UCLA make the classes a lot harder in comparison to Cal poly's?And i also heard that the professors at UCLA are extremely intelligent, but not very good and are difficult to understand,is this true?Any help at all would be appreciated.
Life as a student at University of Texas, and UCLA? I am looking into these schools so I need to know what student life is like and how good the schools are in terms of professors and classes.

UCLA vs UC Berkeley for Philosophy Undergraduate? which is a better school in terms of professors and academic reputation for an undergraduate's degree in philosophy?
What are conservatives thoughts on the study "Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition"? It was a study done from professors at Stanford, UCLA & Maryland http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2003/08/270884.shtml How do conservatives reputiate this government funded scientific study.

Are humanities-degrees and humanities professors Obsolete. Dinosours of 21st. century.? Are humanities-degrees and humanities professors Obsolete. what universities offer the major for teaching mathematics at high school or as a college professor? Can someone please give me a list of the Universities that have the major for becoming a math high school teacher or college professor? I know UCLA is one of them. I would prefer Universities from the UC system and CSU. By the way is USC one of them as well? Thank You
UC Davis or UCLA hard to decide? I am currently a sophomore in UC Davis and I was accepted as a transfer to UCLA, for Biochemistry, but I am afraid that UCLA may have many compeititon and I am interested in going to med school nand I need recommendation letters next year. this means i have to do research with professors and I am worried if I can get one in UCLA as from my experience labs are always full, I am doing research in UC Davis and can get recommendation letters. But UCLA is such a famous and good school, I wonder should I go to UCLA?
UCLA or CSUN? I <3 Neuroscience. I'm fairly smart and I could probably get into UCLA, right now I'm at a city college working on GenEd. The question- Should I take the million classes I need to go to UCLA and go into the neuroscience program which will be challenging and exciting, or should I stick with my current quick finished at the end of next year to transfer to CSU-Northridge's Radiologic Science program which will probably not be as difficult? UCLA Pros -No car necessary -AWESOME -300 students in the department -Professors who are excited and passionate UCLA Cons -A million (63) units left to take before I can transfer (as opposed to the 37 for Northridge) -I'd have to take more Calculus -I'd have to take four chemistry classes (as opposed to the one I'd have to take to go to CSUN) -I'd have to take more statistics.
What are the benefits of going to a larger university? What are the benefits of going to a larger university like University of Minnesota or UCLA? What are the cons? Were you able to communicate with your professors?
Where can I get the ringtone for the "New UCLA Fight Song" by Professor Jim? I hear that it is great!! THIS IS A NEW FIGHT SONG FOR UCLA, WHICH IS A LOT BETTER THAN THE OLD FIGHT SONGS!
How can I get into a good grad business school with my really low college GPA? Hi, I am a freshman in San Jose State University in San Jose, CA. I am a business major (accounting) currently doing my general eds, I really tried hard my first semester (Fall 2005) but got a 2.136, i am trying hard right now (Spring 2006) but might get around the same GPA because it is hard here. Money is not a problem at all and I do not work because I am not struggling financially. How can i possibly get better grades so that I can get into a good graduate business school like USC, UCLA, Berkeley?, Stanford?, Santa Clara University, or any other ones? Please do not say to donate money because I do not want to do that and sleep with professors because they would not do that. Is it possible for me to get into a good grad business school at all?
Is there a governmental project that confines the subject for a couple of years for experiments? I am currently an engineer student at UCLA. I am interested in a project where the subject is isolated and confined for a certain period of time (~4 years) for studies on human behavior. I will be honest (and I am serious), I am willing to give up my freedom and social life for intensive mental and physical trainings. Is there any prominent university professors or scientists out there who might be interested in or working on such project? I would like to email them.
Can I get into UCLA? Suggestions? Well I need to know if I can get in to UCLA. I am a pretty good student. I am very intelligent but get lazy (I know). My GPA as of now is a 3.695 Unweighted and a 4.0-4.2 Weighted (not sure) I have As in my math and science classes except for a "C " in AP Bio for one semester. I am going to take AP Calc BC, AP Statistics, AP Physics, AP APES and 2 other undecided electives and plan on getting As for them all. I took Statistics, Drawing and an introductory Engineering course at my local community college. My SAT scores are as follows: Please bear in mind that these scores reflect my first time taking the test and I will study for the next one. 520 on Critical Reading 520 on Math 640 on Writing (9 on the essay) SAT Subjects 600 Math 2 620 Biology M (They messed up my score. The score report says I took E *sighs* oh well) I am waiting ACT scores. My extracurriculars are pretty good I guess. Here they are: I am in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Pre-College Pipeline program at UCLA.http://www.hhmi.org/grants/query/index.php Basically, I research with a top professor/researcher at UCLA on a certain subject. Mine is on cell signaling and stem cell research. By the way, I work in Dr. Wong's lab at the UCLA school of dentistry. http://www.dentistry.ucla.edu/faculty/wong/ We have to come up with a large research presentation and well, present it at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pacific Division to a auditorium of scientists. It is a 6 week residential program and I am currently in the dorm at Rieber Terrace w00t! :D. I am also in the Junior Engineering Technical Society at my school. I take Engineering classes from the California State University, Northridge (ACCESS program)http://www.csun.edu/pubrels/press_releases/fall07/engineeringaccess.html I volunteer at a local institution that helps poor people to make it simple. (MEND)http://www.mendpoverty.org/ I am a tutor and mentor to my autistic brother and a Sophomore in my school. I mentor my brother in speech/etc etc etc and the sophomore in math and science. I am a member of the science club at my school. I am also a member of the ACE club (Achievement Commitment Excellence). This club focuses on personal and mental welfare and success in the future. I am in the EAOP (Early Academic Outreach Program) http://www.eaop.org/ I am very knowldegeable in lab techniques (everything basically). I also wrote a "killer" (according to my AP English teacher) admissions essay so you may want to take a look at that (ask me). So yeah, tell me what you think. :) PS. I know that I am omitting a lot of stuff so when it gets to my head I will *** to the list! :p

I take Engineering classes from the California State University, Northridge (ACCESS program)http://www.csun.edu/pubrels/press_releases/fall07/engineeringaccess.html It's mostly Manufacturing and Materials Engineering. Physics is involved. I voluntarily deliver food to various homeless people many times throughout the year. Also, gather clothes from family members and others and donate them to institutions that serve the needy various times in the year. I'm not sure how this would fare out on the application (credibility and such). I am a tutor and mentor to autistic brother24/7. It's a very hard job that takes away lots of time from my studies. I do it though to help my family since it would be very hard to burden my parents with caring for my brother since they both work. I explicitly described this situation on my personal statement and what I learned from my brother and how I want to be a Genetic Engineer to take part in the battle against genetic maladies, etc etc etc. Go to college, help my community, etc etc. I am a member of the Calculus club in my school. As far as I know, Stanford/Harvard/Caltech/MIT have the LOWEST admittance rates. Not that I will apply to any of those. Maybe CALTECH but the East Coast had horrible winters >_<. Keep answering guys! I appreciate your feedback. Oh and I am not technically lazy as in inherently lazy; I just get "lazy" sometimes. Bad wording at its finest XD

By the way, I work in Dr. Wong's lab at the UCLA school of dentistry. http://www.dentistry.ucla.edu/faculty/wong/ We have to come up with a large research presentation and well, present it at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pacific Division to at Ashland, Oregon. It is a 6 week residential program. I live/eat/etc at the dorms. I am also in the Junior Engineering Technical Society at my school. I am in the UCLA EAOP (Early Academic Outreach Program) and participated in their summer academies. http://www.eaop.org/ I am very knowldegeable in modern laboratory techniques and am trained and qualified to work in BSL level 1-2 labs. I also wrote a "killer" (according to my AP English teacher) admissions essay so you may want to take a look at that (ask me). Tell me what you think.
Do I have a shot at UCLA? Responses appreciated! :D? I'm curious about my chances at getting into UCLA. I am a pretty good student. Solid GPA and ECs I guess. Well I am basically asking what my chances are considering my stats/activities/etc. Here they are: I am a will be a senior in high school beginning this fall. My GPA as of now is a 3.71 Unweighted and a 4.0-4.2 Weighted I have As in my math and science classes except for a "C " in AP Bio for one semester. I am going to take AP Calc BC, AP Statistics, AP Physics, AP APES and 2 other undecided electives and plan on getting As for them all. I took Statistics, Drawing and an introductory Engineering course at my local community college. My SAT scores are as follows: 590 on Critical Reading 600 on Math 600 on Writing (8 on the essay) SAT Subjects 600 Math 2 520 Biology M (They messed up my score. The score report says I took E *sighs* oh well) I am waiting for ACT scores. My extracurriculars are pretty good I guess. What are my chances at getting into UCLA? Any suggestions? Well I need to know if I can get in to UCLA. I am a pretty good student. I am very intelligent but get lazy (I know). Well I am basically asking what my chances are considering my stats/activities/etc. Here they are: I am a will be a senior in high school beginning this fall. Help! UC Berkeley, UCLA writing programs? Hello there! I'm deciding between UC Berkeley and UCLA for undergraduate next year! Is there anyone who could share some of their knowledge and experiences in the writing programs? Preferably creative writing, fiction, or short story - but anything in general would be so helpful! A large part of my decision will be based on the strength of these programs - professors, class accessibility, class quality, etc. (I'm going to visit later too.) Any feedback would be SO helpful!! Thank you so much in advance! =)
Anyone know anything about UCLA law school?? I'm looking at UCLA for law, buuut i don't know anyone who goes there. what's the campus atmosphere like?? how's the library? professors? classes? anything!!
British professor, Indian doctor, and Chinese dentist - should we be giving our jobs to foreigners? America has always been about freedom and opportunity. We went from being an almost deserted country to a mega-superpower that dwarfs "rich" countries like Europe, France, England etc in terms of economic and military power - all because of immigrants, from Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. BUT in this trouble economy, why are we still giving jobs to foreigners? I'm a student at UCLA. I have a British professor, an Indian doctor and a Chinese dentist - these people should be put on a boat and shipped back to their mother lands, don't you agree? I'm sorry, but why not give the jobs to Americans?
Should I write a letter to admissions office? So this question probably sounds a little strange...when I was in high school, I really wanted to go to Stanford. I ended up getting rejected, while another student in my high school (who I felt to be less qualified) was admitted. I've since graduated and am still a little bitter about it. I've graduated from another elite school (Brown University) and am now a graduate student in UCLA's math program. Still, I feel that, given how their decisions affect the hopes and dreams of young people, they should know how their decision affected me, and how I'm still bothered by it years later. I don't expect them to respond or care in the least, but I am thinking it would make me feel better. What do you think? Also, for the college professors out there, I would like to eventually be a professor (though I don't plan on teaching at Stanford)....would writing such a letter be an unwise career move? Thanks! To the third answerer, you misinterpret my comment. I didn't say all my dreams come from getting in one school. I say their decisions AFFECTS the hopes and dreams of young people (read it again if you don't believe me). Students identify themselves and their abilities based on how these schools respond to them (whether they should or not is irrelevant; what matters is they do) and if universities are happy with their decision-making process then they should at least be aware of the affects that it has on students, even one years down the road. Should I be bitter or not? Who knows. I certainly believe that I am justified in feeling so. It has nothing to do with "growing up." To the second answerer, I'm not sure why I want to bring this back up. Maybe I'm still angry after all these years at being snubbed. I think a lot of people view colleges as almost interchangeable (i.e. why would you want to have gone to Stanford when you went to Brown?) and that's not the case. I'm not sure why people so often insist that someone should be "happy with what they have" and not be bitter about the opportunities that were denied to them. Frankly I've never met a single person who has demonstrated this trait (although I've met many who are willing to point out its absence in someone else). As far as negative energy, also true, but this is one way of releasing said energy, yes? To the third answerer, I refer you to my second comment. I don't think there is anything wrong with being unhappy about being snubbed. It is not tied to maturity in the least (and since when are you the expert on maturity, by the way?). I will grant that, if I were in your situation, I might feel differently at the shot to attend an elite university. BUT, that doesn't in any way make my complaint invalid. And you seem to think I expect Stanford to change their minds or something 5 years later. Not at all. I want it off my chest (even writing this question on yahoo has made me feel better), and I think that Stanford should hear about it. Worst case is they ignore it and I get it off my chest anyways. My biggest concern is the professor aspect, which I don't think you know about (in fact I'm hoping to hear from actual professors on this part). To the fourth answerer, see my second comment. I've said nothing here about why I believe I was more qualified, as there's no way to prove it online right? Seems like it would be wasteful. I've said nothing of having a "god complex" and you're welcome to cite something I've said to prove otherwise. But yes, I do believe I was qualified to attend Stanford. Do I feel they owe me? No. Do I still have a right (and a justifiable one at that) to be angry with their decision? Absolutely. Fortunately I still got into Brown.
Would I be stupid to choose UCSB over UCLA and Cal? I got accepted into all three, including UCSD and UC Davis. I think UCSD is too close to home and UC Davis is just way too far. I'm really looking for a school where you can get individual attention and the students work together, not against each other. I understand that UCLA and Cal are schools where everyone fends for themselves and the professors don't care about who you are. I excelled in high school, but I hardly think that my grades counted and would actually determine how I'd do in UCLA and Cal. Honestly, I'm scared that I'd fail. I heard horror stories of people who sank in a "sink or swim" school and how people study for days to only receive a C in the class. The classes would be EXTREMELY large. UCLA is a big city kind of school and Cal is a little too crazy for me. UCLA sounds great, but it's not a college town. Cal is a college town for sure, but again, too crazy. I'm liberal, but I don't want to be surrounded by those around me who are TOO crazy liberal. UC Santa Barbara is a college town and it sounds relaxing; It's by the beach and Tropicana Gardens Residence Hall sounds so enticing. How much should I consider prestige? I am for sure going to a graduate school because the government would pay for it, but what are my chances of getting in when going to a lower ranking school? Would it matter if I excel at UC Santa Barbara or get straight C's in UCLA or Cal?
Professors-Graduate School Exams-Help!!!? I know I'm repeating this question somewhat, but it's because I don't believe my original question will ever be answered at this point (4 days old). This is mostly for professors on this board (I know there are some). I'm a first year math graduate student at UCLA and I have a very frustrating problem. I know the material very well in pretty much all areas, but I don't seem to test very well. It's a very irritating problem because professors seem to only be impressed by exam scores, and so all my work seems to be going to waste because it's not showing up on the inclass exams. So I guess my question is this: Did any of you have this problem in graduate school? If so, what did you do to correct it (or did you have to)? I really need some advice on this because I don't know what else to try. And for profs in general, what's a good way other than exams to impress you? I would think being knowledgeable is the way, but I'm afraid with how my exams go it may not be. Thanks!!
Question about UCLA class sizes? I'm wondering if I should go to UCLA so I just wanted to know more about the school before I choose. (Civil engineering major by the way). 1. So I heard that UCLA has really huge class sizes...and I wanted to know if that affects the students and their learning ability. 2. If the classes were so big, wouldn't it be intimidating to ask your professor a teacher about a topic you don't understand because it'd make you look stupid in front of everyone and whatnot? And is there a session that you can specifically go to to talk to your professor or ask them questions? 3. Oh and another thing I heard about is professors not actually teaching the class because they are doing research a lot of the time, and that teachers aids will teach instead...is this true?
What is better for civil engineering? Hey would ucla or uc Berkley be better? ( i know Berkley is higher rated, but ive heard that the professors are impersonal and rude)
UCLA or Berkeley for pre-med track? I have been accepted into both UCLA and Berkeley OOS. At UCLA I am a biochemistry major, and at Berkeley a molecular and cell biology major. I plan on going to med school and was wondering if any of you have insights to offer. UCLA has the added bonus of a hospital on campus, while Berkeley is slightly more prestigious. For both schools how easy is it to get involved in research, develop personal relationships with professors, and get chances to intern and volunteer at hospitals? How is the premedical advising? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each schools? I know that if I work hard and am proactive my undergraduate experience will be what I make of it, but what have your experiences been like?
help with admission into UCLA? i am only a sophmore in high school and truth be told my grades were pretty much terrible my freshman year and first semester of my sophmore year but ive pulled alot of them up, most of my grades are As then a few Bs and only one D (in geometry) but for the most part my quarter grades are really good and im planing on pulling my Bs up to As keeping my As, and trying to pull up my geometry grade to a C or maybe a B for the semester. I also joined and was accepted into the art academy, which i will participate in comunity service, job shadowing, internships, etc... and i am also planning on getting a job soon. I really want to go to UCLA, more than any other college. actually its the only four year im interested in going to. but my grades where so terrible for three semesters im not sure what to do. I heard that being in an academy is always good, and i have tried really really hard to improve; but then again im sure they dont really care about that. Do you think if i actually try my very hardest, and get good grades for the rest of my high school career that there might be a chance the UCLA will accept me? or will i have to spend a year or two in community college? :( **and if your a UCLA student or formerly a student, could you give me any information like whats the college like in general? your experience with professors, on campus food, transportation, on and off campus entertainment, dorm rooms and room mates, and the prossess for chossing what dorm you will stay in, who your room mate will be, and if you ever have the chance to pick who your room mate is. thankyou all so much for your answers, opinions, and advice.
Is Lee Bollinger of Columbia just another Useless Higher Education Administrator? It's not just in Columbia, it is also at University of Texas, UCLA, Kansas State, your college ... There is a thick layer of Higher Eductation Administrators Overhead who's main purpose is to save their over $100,000 a year salary and live off of hard working professors and students, instead for good of the Community. Bollinger has embarassed United States, just like a rude, emotional teenager.
UCSC or UCLA as a psychology transfer student? i have been accepted to both schools, and although i know that thery are both polar opposites. UCLA is known as a better school, i am torn in making a final decision. I feel that UCSC would be a better experience with smaller classes, more one on one time with the professors and a wonderful change of pace. Which school would you reccomend? Does it matter as an undergraduate if i definetly plan on continuing my education? Will it matter in the long run in terms of making connections or trying to get into a grad school? even more of the dilemma is that i like ucla and the area a great deal, i just love Santa Cruz more..
Chances and information on Transfering to UCLA's or LMU's Film School's? Hi everyone I am going to be a junior transfer and I am applying to both UCLA's and LMU's film schools. I am sophomore right now at Chapman University and a television major at the schools Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, which has gained much recognition in the past few years with its brand new facilities, to professors and etc. I have a 3.5 gpa...I was selected to the the chancellors list for academic success. I have also been involved in the honor society of gamma beta phi and also with many clubs such as Invisible children which has become a very successful group on Chapman's campus. I know both UCLA and LMU are great film schools and I am not a California resident as I am originally from Washington state but since I have pretty good grades and am at a good film school already and have had lots of experience in television work at school...would this increase my chances for these two schools? Thanks!

Can I become a film professor if i earn a masters degree at an exceptional film grad school? Hers my story. I am an aspiring film editor. Film editing has long been my passion. I am planning to attend USC, UCLA, or NYU for grad school to get my masters degree. If I decide to become a professor of film instead of film editing, would a masters degree from one of these schools (three of the top film schools in the world) get me a career as a professor of film at a university?
How to talk to professor about grade? I had a C- before the final at UCLA and a C after the final which was worth 30% of the grade and I got an A+ on the final exam. Should I ask the professor to give me a better grade since I did so well on the final? How and what should I tell her?
How to become a college mathematics professor? at the junior college level, at the university level. Hi I am currently at a city college transferring to hopefully UCLA or UC berkley. I am wondering if anyone knows if I need a BA in Mathematics or would I have to major in applied mathematics to become a college professor at the junior college or university level. Anything Helps. Thank you
can I get into usc or ucla? For UCLA My gpa is 3.86 using the UC gpa calculations. For USC My weighted 10-12 is 4.4 unweighted 3.5 My SAT is 2160 I want to go to their music schools and my teacher who is a professor says that my audition materials are pretty strong but I am worried about my academics since they are a litte weak
Do college just sell Admit ticket to class. Free classes from MIT, BERKELEY, STANFORD, YALE UCLA.? google: free, digital lectures from colleges. U see: 1. professor giving lectures. 2. students taking notes. 3. blackboard where note is written. all colleges are basically the same. $200,000 to watch someone give a lecture when all it is free. college should be free. especially public colleges paid with tax money. university of california, michigan, texas, oregon, arizona, should give all courses, material away for free. All paid with tax money. knowledge belongs to the world.
What can I do with a degree in Political Science & History? So I attend UCLA and I'm a first year double majoring in both Political Science and History. Not sure if it matters, but I am Chinese-American (so I guess that actually might matter if anyone says anything like "Hey you should run for some government office!") The only careers I've mainly though about are Law, high school history teacher, or a university professor. Any ideas?
NYU Stern or UCLA Anderson MBA? I'm from NY, born and bred and I have alotta pride in NY as calling it my home. I attended Stony Brook University out in Long Island and have since worked as an investment banker, stock broker and now a tax adviser. In fall of 2011 I plan on starting my MBA specializing in Entrepreneurship at either of these top 2 choices: NYU Stern or UCLA Anderson. I live out in LA right now, great experience, gr8 place to make $, but I dont like the materialistic, lazy and non-diverse west coast lifestyle. NY is home and the only place I would every start a family and raise my kids is Long Island. As far as credentials, marketability, ROI, Education, Experience, Opportunity, networking with professors and young professionals, I would like to hear your fighting argument for or against either one of these SCHOOLS AND THEIR PROGRAMS. Thanks.
UCLA Class Retake Policy? I want to retake an Econ 41 class at UCLA. I took it during my junior year of fall 2008. I received a C and I just requested from my professor to change it to a C- so that I can retake it. So is it possible for me to retake it later in my senior year? This was a course that was a prerequisite for the econ 101 course i'm taking now in winter 2009, so does that matter?

One of my professor insulted me? I don't believe it, I mean today after class I went to go talk to my professor at UCLA university about some questions of my future and after we were done talking she just told me out of no where "you need to start wearing more makeup" I mean she told me straight up at my face and I wore mineral makeup today and she wears a little bit of makeup. What I mean is that should I listen to her advise, I mean I believe as myself as being naturally beautiful and could I really look more better with more makeup? I'm sorry, I'm just not experienced in this sort of stuff because I mostly spend my whole time studying.
Are there any university professors here who can answer a few of my questions? I want to go for a Ph.D in history. I know the job market for history professors is bad, but I am confident that I can get into a top notch graduate school, and I think that secures me a job position. That actually brings me to my first question. How important of a role does where you get your Ph.D play? I am currently a junior in UCLA with a 4.00 GPA. How important is the GPA in the admissions process in comparison to the GRE? Lastly, I am not native (but my english beats most native americans' anyways). So I do have an accent, but it's not heavy. Will universities use that against me when I apply for a job?
graduate from IIT,fellowship at UCLA,born in west bengal, worked for Northrop & Xerox & patepatented a technolo Born in abject poverty in West Bengal his early schooling was in a small village school. He was a part of one of the earliest batches passing out of IIT Kharagpur. When a professor in Los Angeles chanced upon one of his research papers, he offered him a fellowship at UCLA. In LA he worked for companies like Northrop and Xerox and patented a technology which is now widely used for medical treatment. From a small hut to a palace in Beverly Hills and from being a social outcast to company of Hollywood celebrities, his is a true rags to riches story. Who is this renowned physicist, who recently authored a book on science and spirituality?
Is UCLA a good school? i'm going to be a senior next year and i'm trying to narrow down my choices. if someone goes there or is an alumni can you tell me about the overall atmosphere of the campus, are there fun things to do around, about the professors, and anything else you can tell me to either recommend to go/not to go there. thanks :]
UCLA questions plz help? i am asking a series of questions about the University of California in Los Angeles...i am a senior in high school and i really need to decide where to go, and i am interested in UCLA but there is several things i have to find out first. 1: Does UCLA have a religious affiliation? 2: Typical class size (in ratio students to professor) 3: College expenses (tuition, room and board, estimate total budget, application fees, deposits, ect) 4: Financial Aid (Deadlines, required forms, scholarships) 5: Housing (Residence hall requirements, food plans) 6: Facilities (Academic, recreational) 7: Activities (clubs, organizations, Greek life, athletics)
Which of these schools has the best graduate film program? Rochester Institute of Technology University of Miami Massachusetts College of Art and Design Florida State University Ohio University Columbia College Chicago University of Iowa Syracuse University Those are in order from the one I'm most interested in to least interested in. I can't afford NYU, UCLA, or USC and my main goal is to become a film professor so forking out the extra cash for those schools would be pointless. Do any of those programs listed stand out at all? I'm double majoring in film studies and english at UNC-Wilmington right now.
offer of admission retraction from ucla?? I am transferring from a cc this fall, after finishing two years here, and skipping the last two years of high school. the past three semesters i have had really good grades, and i have been offered admission at ucla. the problem is that this past semester i have been ridiculously ill with infection after infection, and because of this, two of my classes have been nearly entirely messed up. out of the five classes i was taking, i have been able to keep A's in 3, mainly because attendance was either not entirely essential to the grade or, for the case of one of my classes, the timing of the class happened to be at a time where i was "most okay". for the other two, attendance had a very large role in the grade, one being a lab course, the other with a professor unwilling to accept my papers because of my excessive absences. would ucla retract my admission due to this dreadful semester? please answer, i would love to go to ucla, but if i can't i need to try and go to another campus :(
UCLA, I am attending Mt. Sac CC, my first semester, Psychology major. ? This is my first semester in a CC and I would very much like to transfer to UCLA as a Psychology major, BA. I am hoping to get a Doctoral Degree if I survive. I checked the statistics of people getting in to this school and only half make it in out of everyone who applies. I would like some advice from people who are attending UCLA or graduated from there, what I should be doing at this moment, how to prepare for such a school. Do I see a counselor now? Should I make a field trip to UCLA now? Do I get involved with extra curricular activities right now? I will take any advice from anyone that will help me to make it to UCLA. Thanks! I am not sure if I want to be a Psychologist or a Counselor. I definitely do not want to be a teacher or professor.
University of Miami or UCLA? I am having an extremely difficult time deciding which of the two universities to choose. My question to you is which one would you rather attend and why? I would also like to know how the city the college is located in is. I will be going to one of these two, if I get accepted, fall of 2010. How is the college in terms of the students and/or professors? Which university has the better biomedical engineering program? This question is not too important I am just thinking ahead and if you can only answer certain parts of this question that is perfectly fine. Thanks in advance.
University students and professors! Especially U.S. top 50s! Help! Is this typical university professor? I am going to be in UCLA this fall as a freshman I am currently in a community college history class, I am history major This is my first class in a college and I don't know if this teacher is typical that I am suppose to expect the same in UCLA, or she is a rare case This is what she is like She teaches and answers questions likes any other teacher, but when it comes to her exams, when we ask her what it is going to be like, she gave us a very ambiguous and misleading answer. She said we do not need to worry about names and dates, just big ideas. Ironically during the test, it turns out to be, for example, we do not need to remember a date is September 4th 455 A.D., but we need to know that it is in the 5th century A.D.. For the no need to remember names, it turns out we need to recall the names once saw the description. Like this and that happened in a battle, what is the name of the battle; then four multiple choice answers and we need to choose one. She also said both her notes and the textbook covers the test, but, according to what she said, we need to know "the big ideas"; well, knowing what is the name of place Pope Gregory was captured is not a BIG IDEA. A place that has historical significance, I agree, but then she said no names... If we ask her any more questions, she will just repeat what she said before. Also, the textbook had a website behind it, a place where I can find chapter questions and outlines. So the other day I asked my professor if the quiz questions are any good, I even brought a sample of 3 questions with me. She said yes. Well, turns out the percentage I got in those online quizzes have 10% difference than the midterm I took in her class She never gave any practice question or practice exam for us to see. I did ask, yet the first time I saw the type of questions that she asks is the same day of my midterm, which counts for 50% of my grade. So, is this typical in universities? Thanks so....the key is never believe anything university professors tell you?
How can I teach myself statistics? I need to self teach myself statistics to write my thesis paper for school. My professors are not helpful and I have no books or resources since I am studying overseas. I have the new version of SPSS and have read the help manual. Also, I have used the UCLA statistics help websites. Does anyone know some good online resources to help me learn? I am having the most difficulty figuring out how to analyze my data with the appropriate measurement tools. Example-use t-tests or chi square tests or ANOVA etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated
going into graduate school from a state university or community college transferring to a UC? i'm currently a high school senior, and i'm about to head for college this fall, majoring in sociology. i'm having a hard time choosing which college to go to. i also plan to obtain a master's degree in social work from either UCLA or UC Berkeley. would it be easier for me to get into graduate school by going into a state university such as San Jose State [because it would be easier to talk to professors and get recommendations?] or would it be better to go to a community college, then transfer to one of the top UCs [because they would value UCs over CSUs?]. my high school GPA was average, but it was mainly because I slacked off after freshmen year. also, what colleges and universities are actually good for studying sociology and social work? i feel like i'm only planning to go to the UCs just because they're UCs. please help me make a decision. thank you!
Do you think I'll be accepted into UCLA? I am a community college transfer student and I'm waiting to see whether I'll be accepted into UCLA for fall 2009. As expected, it's quite an agonizing wait. I have already been accepted into UCSB, but my first choice is UCLA. While I wait for the acceptance list for all transfer students (it will most likely come out next week), I would like to be judged by you. I applied to the Communication Studies major, which is highly competitive. A transfer student must at least have a 3.5 GPA in order to even be considered by admissions. I have a 3.82 GPA & I have completed all of the necessary preparatory courses for my major. In addition, I have completed well over all the general education coursework (known as IGETC), totaling an impressive 67 units. I think it's important to note that I originally went to the California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where many of my coursework & academic excellence comes from. My GPA would be nearly a 4.0, but at this particular university they allow A- grades (2 of which I have). Community colleges, however, don't use the plus and minus system, which increases everyone's GPAs. Meaning if one really got an A- in a class, the professor would give him/her an official A. I am considered a California Community transfer though, because I transferred over to GCC in order to have a better chance of being accepted (as well as securing all of my classes taken at CSUN). Furthermore, I've been on the dean's list for every semester I have attended college (at both GCC & CSUN), and I've completed well over 100 hours of community service involving different clubs and organizations. So, am I worthy enough to be accepted by UCLA? What are your thoughts? Thank you for all of your opinions.
Do I EVEN have a shot at UCLA (feel free to be harsh)? I went for UCLA, NYU, University of Michigan/Wisconsin, university illinois urbana champaign, berkley (HAHA...i kid myself a lot) so whats the damage (i'll find out anyways when I get all my nice go-to-hell letters) overall unweighted GPA - 3.67 almost all classes honors/AP 12 sport athlete varsity indoor/outdoor track all 4 years -sectionals every year varsity xc 2 years -sectionals last two years national honors society three years literary magazine one of the editors for newspaper (3 years, entry by admission) key club - 3 years diversity club - 3 years relay for life committee board - 3 years relay for life event- 4 sat math - 680 to 710 sat writing - 700 to 750 sat reading - 710 to 760 ACT - 31 SAT subject tests - chinese/bio don't remember SAT essay - 11 out of 12 volunteer @ hospital/library - 200 hours went to china to tutor farm area kids - 200 ish hours fluent chinese/spanish speaker published 3 scientific articles under a university professor over a few summer published a couple scattered poems on the side (small projects i don't even know if they count haha) my hs is competitive and i was told colleges weigh our scores higher? which...was probably just meant to make me feel better but hey. it worked.

Will a Master's Degree in film allow me to become a teacher? I would like to someday become a professor and teach film at a university in case I don't make it in the movie industry. Hopefully the degree will be from a good school like NYU, USC, or UCLA. Thanks for your time.

Santa Monica College? There is a myth that students who go to SMC for 2 years do relatively well at UCLA because the school has a special program for students who want to transfer there and use UCLA textbooks, hire part-time UCLA professors and etc. And I heard classes at SMC are relatively more challenging than other CCs. Are those true?
A question about cc transfer.. Please HElp?? I am thinking of going to Santa Monica College and transfer to a CAL or UCLA I am worried because of a myth that transfer students do horrible academically when they get into Berkeley or UCLA because the education they get from first 2 years of UC and CC are just too much different. Is that generally true? Is the gap just outrageously big that transfer students can not do well in school even if they try? Also, I heard schools like Santa Monica College prepare students a lot better than the unknown JCs. For example, SMC has a set program that for students preparing for UCLA that uses UCLA textbooks and even hire some part-time UCLA professors for their students. If I wanted to transfer to UCLA and want to try to get a 3.5 GPA, would it be better for me to attend SMC for 2 yeras than just goint to any cc? Thank you
UCLA vs. Occidental Which college would you choose if you thought you wanted to pursue premed? If you had a feeling you wanted to go into medicine which school would you choose and why. I'm having a crisis right now with these options! I feel that while UCLA has the prestige, name and recognition I feel as though I might just fade into the background there. I also understand how cutthroat the competition is there. Occidental is a small school and you really get to know your professors; giving one more opportunities at research and interning stuff. I don't know what do you guys think?
If I were to work at the UCLA, what would be the best place to live in? Provided that I'm a professor whose annual salary is around $150,000...would Westwood be a safe and appropriate place to live in? What about Bel Air and Brentwood? I'm a medievalist speciallized in arms and armor; especially medieval swords. Nope! My last name isn't STARK ;-)
Smashlab on Discovery Channel? How much longer can this poor imitation of Mythbusters be on? Every episode must cost a fortune, and I am fairly certian none of thier ideas are their ideas. I know the earthquake device is from a UCLA professor. Anyway, who hates this show like me?
Should I go to UC Davis, UCLA, or UCSB? Major is Biochemistry and I want to be challenged but not overwhelmed.? I live in California and I have very competitive SAT scores and GPA I want to attend a medical school one day I want to be able to have free time for volunteering/research, for playing on the lacrosse team, and for socializing/relaxing. I am prepared to work hard but I don't want bad or frequently unavailable professors and cutthroat competition that will jeopardize my GPA. Thanks for the help everyone. I have always been leaning towards UC Davis but seeing friends being accepted to places like Stanford, Cornell, and Yale has pressured me to focus on UCLA (I can't afford private schools). For those of you who suggest UC Berkeley, thanks anyway but I have been there a few times and I hate it.
What are my chances of going to Cornell, Columbia, or UCLA Grad School in English Lit. with a 3.3 GPA? My GPA has a possibility of finishing at a 3.3, although I am shooting for a 3.7. For the sake of this, let's go with 3.3. I am applying into a Masters to PhD program at the above schools. I want to go into Milton studies and will have a reference from an Oxford built Milton scholar as well as two other professors; one at the beggining and one at the end of their career. I have an excellent CV with one undergrad publication, two editorial board positions at research journals and a number of executive spots within various groups on my campus. Further to this, I have placed and completed two summer internships in publishing and have attended a variety of different conferences in English Literature. The reason my GPA suffers is due to illness in my second year, where I dropped out of a number of business classes. None of my English courses suffered and I have in fact had no mark below 75 in an English class with most classes placing in the 80+ range. What are my chances? OK GOOD NEWS! I just found out that my 17th Century Lit. and Chaucer marks are going to bump my GPA up a lot! I should end up with the 3.7 GPA I want. I won't get the 4.0 that is for sure, but with everything else do I stand a chance. Grad school people, not Columbia College of Undergraduate Studies.
Dude, Where's My 2008 Recession? ? Monthly US data on payroll employment, civilian employment, industrial production and the unemployment rate are used to define a recession-dating algorithm that nearly perfectly reproduces the NBER official peak and trough dates. The only substantial point of disagreement is with respect to the NBER November 1973 peak. The algorithm prefers September 1974. In addition, this algorithm indicates that the data through June 2008 do not yet exceed the recession threshold, and will do so only if things get much worse. Abstract from "What's a Recession, Anyway?" by UCLA Professor Edward E. Leamer, NBER Working Paper, August 2008
What are your impressions of these people? Hi, I don't want to go too much into detail or reasons why I'm asking cause it might bias answers, but please tell me general impressions of both sets of people in the following links (you can click on professors name to get bigger pictures). Also some comparitive things would be nice... who looks nicer, who looks more fun, who looks smarter, who looks more authoritative, etc. Thanks much. Check out these 18 interesting things you can do to your body that you might have not known about? I think it is pretty cool!!! 1. If your throat tickles, scratch your ear! “When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm,” says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. “This spasm relieves the tickle.” 2. Experience supersonic hearing! If you're stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with your right ear. It's better than your left at following the rapid rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. If, on the other hand, you're trying to identify that song playing softly in the elevator, turn your left ear toward the sound. The left ear is better at picking up music tones. 3. Overcome your most primal urge! Need to pee? No bathroom nearby? You are male? Then fantasize... Thinking about sex preoccupies your brain, so you won't feel as much discomfort, says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of male reproductive medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine. 4. Feel no pain! German researchers have discovered that coughing during an injection can lessen the pain of the needle stick. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the painconducting structures of the spinal cord. 5. Clear your stuffed nose! The easiest, quickest, and cheapest way to relieve sinus pressure is to alternately thrust your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then press between your eyebrows with one finger. This causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine. The motion loosens congestion; after 20 seconds, you'll feel your sinuses start to drain. 6. Fight fire without water! Studies have shown that patients who sleep on their left sides are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. The esophagus and stomach connect at an angle. When you sleep on your right, the stomach is higher than the esophagus, allowing food and stomach acid to slide up your throat. When you're on your left, the stomach is lower than the esophagus, so gravity's in your favor. 7. Cure your toothache without opening your mouth! Just rub ice on the back of your hand, on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and index finger. A Canadian study found that this technique reduces toothache pain by as much as 50 percent compared with using no ice. The nerve pathways at the base of that V stimulate an area of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands. 8. Make burns disappear! When you accidentally singe your finger on the stove, clean the skin and apply light pressure with the finger pads of your unmarred hand. Ice will relieve your pain more quickly, Dr. DeStefano says, but since the natual method brings the burned skin back to a normal temperature, the skin is less likely to blister. 9. Stop the world from spinning! One too many drinks left you dizzy? Put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear responsible for balance, the cupula, floats in a fluid of the same density as blood. “As alcohol dilutes blood in the cupula, the cupula becomes less dense and rises,” says Dr. Schaffer. This confuses your brain. The tactile input from a stable object gives the brain a second opinion, and you feel more in balance. Because the nerves in the hand are so sensitive, this works better than the conventional footonthefloor wisdom. 10. Unstitch your side! If you're like most people, when you run, you exhale as your right foot hits the ground. This puts downward pressure on your liver (which lives on your right side), which then tugs at the diaphragm and creates a side stitch, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Men. The fix: Exhale as your left foot strikes the ground. 11. Stanch blood with a single finger! Pinching your nose and leaning back is a great way to stop a nosebleed if you don't mind choking on your own O positive. A more civil approach: Put some cotton on your upper gums just behind that small dent below your nose and press against it, hard. “Most bleeds come from the front of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides the nose,” says Peter Desmarais, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Entabeni Hospital, in Durban, South Africa. “Pressing here helps stop them.” 12. Make your heart stand still! Trying to quell firstdate jitters? Blow on your thumb. The vagus nerve, which governs heart rate, can be controlled through breathing, says Ben Abo, an emergency medical services specialist at the University of Pittsburgh. It'll get your heart rate back to normal. 13. Thaw your brain! Too much ice-cream too fast will freeze the brains of lesser men. As for you, press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much as you can. “Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing, too,” says Abo. “In compensating, it overheats, causing an icecream headache.” The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside. 14. Prevent nearsightedness! Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. “It's usually caused by nearpoint stress.” In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles like the eyes into relaxing as well. 15. Wake the dead! If your hand falls asleep while you're driving or sitting in an odd position, rock your head from side to side. It'll painlessly banish your pins and needles in less than a minute, says Dr. DeStefano. A tingly hand or arm is often the result of compression in the bundle of nerves in your neck; loosening your neck muscles releases the pressure. Compressed nerves lower in the body govern the feet, so don't let your sleeping dogs lie. Stand up and walk around. 16. Impress your friends! Next time you're at a party, try this trick: Have a person hold one arm straight out to the side, palm down, and instruct him to maintain this position. Then place two fingers on his wrist and push down. He'll resist. Now have him put one foot on a surface that's a half inch higher (a few magazines) and repeat. This time his arm will cave like the French. By misaligning his hips, you've offset his spine, says Rachel Cosgrove, C.S.C.S., coowner of Results Fitness, in Santa Clarita, California. Your brain senses that the spine is vulnerable, so it shuts down the body's ability to resist. 17. Breathe underwater! If you're dying to retrieve that quarter from the bottom of the pool, take several short breaths first essentially, hyperventilate. When you're underwater, it's not a lack of oxygen that makes you desperate for a breath; it's the buildup of carbon dioxide, which makes your blood acidic, which signals your brain that somethin' ain't right. “When you hyperventilate, the influx of oxygen lowers blood acidity,” says Jonathan Armbruster, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at Auburn University. “This tricks your brain into thinking it has more oxygen.” It'll buy you up to 10 seconds. 18. Read minds! Your own! “If you're giving a speech the next day, review it before falling asleep,” says Candi Heimgartner, an instructor of biological sciences at the University of Idaho. Since most memory consolidation happens during sleep, anything you read right before bed is more likely to be encoded as longterm memory.
Isn't it funny how noted scientists from MIT, UCLA, Harvard etc..all challenge darwins failed theories? Why are Hillary advisers dropping like flies? Clinton adviser quits over China rhetoric A top expert on China has resigned as an informal adviser to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign in the wake of the candidate's increasingly harsh anti-China rhetoric. Richard Baum, a political science professor at the Center for Chinese Studies at UCLA, resigned in light of what he called “grossly misguided accusations” made by Clinton about China. “As a lifelong Democrat, it saddens me that Sen. Clinton has chosen to take the low road in her effort to gain our party’s presidential nomination,” Baum said in an e-mail to Politico. The Clinton campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment by Politico. Clinton recently has ratcheted up her anti-China sentiments, criticizing the country on everything from its human rights violations to its undervalued currency. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0408/9719.html
Is Affirmative Action impeding rather than facilitating diversity in the ranks of practicing Lawyers? Richard Sander, an economist and law professor at UCLA seems to think so. In an article published in the Stanford Law Review, Sander and his research team concluded several thousand would-be black lawyers either dropped out of law school or failed to pass the bar BECAUSE of affirmative action. I'd like to hear what you think. http://www.law.ucla.edu/sander/NSF/Cal%20Bar%20-%20mismatch%20effect%20background.pdf "Recently, a California bar committee voted 5-3 to turn down Sander’s request to use bar data collected over the last three decades on student test scores, law school admissions, academic performance and bar passage rates." Why would they do this? Are they purposely trying to hurt minorities?
What is the worst hotbed of Communism in the USA now? Is it still UCLA/Berkeley? In 1934 UCLA Provost Ernest Moore stated that his own campus was “the worst hotbed of communism in America.” Later that year, Moore dismissed four students, including the student body president, from the university for “communist activity.” In 1948, following a luncheon with UCLA Provost Clarence Dykstra, the L.A. Times called the campus “one of Communism’s prime postwar educational targets.” In 1969, the University of California Board of Regents, having discovered that an assistant professor in the department of philosophy, ordered Chancellor Charles E. Young to fire admitted Communist Party member Angela Davis. If you ever thought the phrase "wild-eyed Communist" was some kind of exaggeration, take a look at this... http://www.zombietime.com/how_berkeley_can_you_be/135-3576_102MVI.mov
Change of Major English to Science? My problem is this: I've changed my mind about my major. I started going to college when I was 15 years old and back then, I was in love with science! I was fairly good at math but had little patience. After taking chemistry, my science bubble burst. The next year I chose English as my major and will be graduating with an English major from UCLA in 08. After all these years of English, I have realized that I don't want to be in this field anymore. I don't want to be a lawyer or English professor. I'm interested in heading back to the sciences or even the business field. Is it possible for a non-science major to succeed in the sciences? I would love to hear some stories.
For all you Pagans/Wicca/Sorcerers and Shamans, have you read "A Separate Reality" or "Tales of Power" ? The author is Carlos Castaneda, a UCLA anthropology professor who lived with a Yaqui Indian holy man, or Socerer, called Don Juan. Considered the "Godfather of the New Age Movement" I thought you might have. You are constantly surprising me with your answers. Peace and Love I read them then also 30 years ago, you have no idea what you are capable of. I know they are not fiction, but non-fiction
Must Read!!!? A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the UCLA. One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked at the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am, God. I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence... The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the heck is the matter with you? Why did you do that?" The Marine calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting America's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So...He sent me." natchrlyred: Yes, it's supposed to be ACLU. I typed it wrong, my mistake. :-)
why does it seem so impossible? i attend a community college. in a few years i plan on transferring to ucla as a biochemistry major, because i plan on attending dental school after my undergrad studies. i would LOVE to double major - my second major would be art history - for a number of reasons. one being med and dental schools love "well-rounded" applicants, two is i absolutely love art history, and three is if my dental aspirations dont work out, i would become an art history teacher and/or professor. but it seems impossible to major in both because of course credit limits and everything. is there ANY way i can pull this off? has someone ever been in a similar situation?
Is it true that at the UCs, students do not get much academic help and have to learn the material on their own I have heard professors at UCB, UCLA, UCSD do not like to teach so much because they know that the students are smart and will teach themselves... which makes it harder on the students... is it really true? or only at certain uc's? alot of UCB students ahve told me that its mostly like you study on your own and there is noone really there to help you and you could go to office hours or discussions and such but its not so great... are people not collaborative?? (in majors like bioengineering at ucsd and biology at ucla/ucberk) thanks
is it hard to get A-/B+ grades in college? I'm really intimidated right now...it seems like everyone else is really smart too, and the material is harder than in high school. I just started classes at UCLA, and one of the professors was like "I'll tell you straight out right now, most people get Bs in my class". I guess I was mostly a straight A student in high school, but I'm not sure of how well I'll do here.
A few questions about doing a Ph.D in history? So I'm a student at UCLA, junior, and I have a 4.00 gpa thus far. I am wondering what the breakdown is between the GRE score and the GPA when it comes to admissions decision. Which one do graduate school look at more? Does going to UCLA help me at all? How long would it take me to get the Ph.D, assuming that I would be doing it PART TIME. What's the market for history professors? Is it hard to find a job? (USA)
What do you think about photographers who work for free? By Matt Brown Stop working for free! Next time you're in the local hardware store, ask the salesman to give you free tools and tell him in return you will tell all your friends you got your tools from his hardware store. Or try it at the grocery store. I can see it now, standing at the check at line: "That we be $102.85, sir." "You don't know me but I will tell everyone I know to shop at Ralph's if I can just get my groceries for free". "Sure Mr. Brown nobody knows about us yet, here's your food and have a nice day!" Sweet! Can you send me a photo? Can I get a photo for free? We will give you credit for the photo! How many times have you heard that? Free! Free! Free! I've had CBS.com, Wilson Sporting Goods Global Marketing, Fox Sports, ESPN.com, ABC, CBS, Fox, Rivals.com, Baseball America, college websites and yes, newspapers, magazines, all ask for FREE photos. Some are even willing to give me photo credit. Wow! Give me photo credit for a photo I created! So these companies can take it and make money from a product I provided free. Yes, money. The bottom line here is money. Give me your photos for free and I can post them on their company website or run it in a publication. .. what a concept! I received an email the other day from a CBS College Sports Network production assistant. Here is the exchange: "Matt, I hope all is well. Can you email me six Cal State Fullerton Baseball action photos from this season? Thanks, Mr. X" I replied that day: "Mr. X, There will be a charge for use of the photos. Matt" The response: "Matt, My boss said no due to the fee...sorry. Thanks, Mr. X" At the same time I was emailing Mr. X, he was emailing Mr. Greenlee, the Sports Information Director at Cal State Fullerton asking if he can get me to waive the fee because CBS just doesn't have the money to buy photos. Did you know what David Letterman makes a year? Dave signed a contract in 2006 that makes him a reported $38 million a year! Why can't CBS buy my photos ($50 each) for their website? I emailed Mr. X and asked if CBS ever pays for photos. What he wrote back was shocking: Southern California freelance photographer Matt Brown shot this during a portrait lighting class with Cal State Fullerton basketball player Frank Robinson during Sports Shooter Academy V. "Matt:Cal State Fullerton was the 1st school that we came across that charges a fee to use photos. Other schools just gladly give them to us for free and we credit the photographer or sports information from the school…whichever they prefer. I have yet to see CBS College Sports pay for photos to use. Mr. X" Well that answers why can't CBS buy my photos ($50 each) for their TV show: Because you or your boss is handing out photos for free! Maybe you don't know this is happening or you just like seeing your byline on a website. But it's just bad business. I never had anyone call me up after seeing my photos on ESPN.com and say we NEED you to shoot our annual report or our next catalog. Maybe schools have something worked out with their photographers about handing out photos to websites. Maybe the photographer gets paid extra for the ability to hand the photos out. Just make sure you know what is happening to your work. I have a feeling a lot of photographers don't know what happens to their photos. I had another jaw dropping moment when a former athlete from one of my schools who now works in the SID office at a PAC-10 school, told me when athletes ask her for photos, she would just burn them a CD full of photos. MY TWO SCHOOLS Two of my bigger clients are Division I schools, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton. I have established the rules for working for them and the do's and don't of using my work are set in writing. 1) I own all my photos, not the school. 2) Photos can go out to local newspapers and the newspaper of the hometown of the student athlete. 3) No photos go to magazines, websites, players, family or fans and all referrals go through me. One school follows the rules with no trouble. The other school is hard headed. I have found photos on the websites and magazine and I get the line: "We should have the ability to publicize our programs." I understand their point of view. But here's my point of view: If the schools just hand my photos over to another source they are going to make money from my work and I am getting nothing in return. Isn't it reasonable to expect to be paid fairly for photos? HURTING A FRIEND As you know, we work in a small community, which is getting smaller everyday. A good friend of mine, Larry Goren does freelance work for Baseball America. He covers Major League Baseball, the minor leagues and college baseball for them on a regular basis. Larry covers 4 - 5 Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton baseball games a year. Baseball America would call Cal State Fullerton or Long Beach State and ask for free baseball photos for its website or magazine. By getting photos from the schools for free they wouldn't have to pay Larry for his photos. Faculty member and freelance photographer Matt Brown gives advice to participant Sawitree Crowe while covering an NCAA men's baseball game at Cal State Fullerton during Sports Shooter Academy V held in Orange County, CA. I put a stop to it after locking horns with Baseball America a couple times. Remember we are working in a small community and we must lookout for each other. We can help or hurt each other's bottom line. LOSING OUT TO THE WORKING Last week I had two schools, Purdue and Nevada, email me about shooting the NCAA Women's Softball Regional at UCLA. I gave them a cost for shooting per game. I sent samples and waited to hear back from them. You would think if someone goes out of their way to get in touch with you, it might be a done deal and they are serious about hiring a professional. The next day I heard from them: Both schools are going with someone else. I asked them who the photographer was and how much was he charging and I was told it was a professor from the UCLA Science Department. I know some people at the campus and made some calls. I found out his name and did some homework on being a professor at UCLA. This Weekend Warrior makes over $90,000 a year, loves taking sports photos and regularly hands over free photos to schools. He just picked up the phone and called the schools looking to shoot for them during the playoffs. The cost he was asking: $100. Not per game, for the entire weekend! That's 3 or 4 games for $100 total! I emailed Joseph Rudnick, Dean of Chemistry & Biochemistry at UCLA, asking if could work at school on Tuesday and Thursday for free because I just love science. I told him I received an A+ in Biochemistry in college. Think about it for a second. We have people who just love taking photos for free or dirt-cheap as a hobby and think that they can do what you do for a living (as a professional photographer) . I went to school for photography and I have busted my ass to get where I'm at and for what? So some professor can do below average work for cheap? Why can't I teach biochemistry for little or no cost? I never heard back from the dean, too bad ... I was really looking forward to teaching biochemistry at UCLA. Well, if you can't read it, why you even bother answering? Don't. And it's nothing what happened to me - it's a common issue and that was written by Matt Brown, who is a freelance photographer based in Southern California. He is also the co-director of the Sports Shooter Academy.
